The Help of Angels by H. J. Zeger

A historical novel with an unearthly twist

The help of angels

In this historical novel from the time period of 1933 to 1945, Benjamin Weiss grows up happy and healthy in a small Hungarian town called Beregszász. A large, close-knit family and friends surround him. Shortly after he becomes a young man, the German and Hungarian armies occupy his hometown, and they start their deportation process. Ben works hard to stay alive and retains hope amidst the atrocities he witnesses inside the concentration camp. When three high-ranking Nazi officers visit the camp Ben is in (Mauthausen), his fate is thrown into question. The novel was partially based on the author's father's family story of survival and loss during the Second World War, with the addition of some fantastical elements. It follows the fate of one family, but tells how millions had suffered at the hands of Hungarian and Nazi war criminals. The Help of Angels invites readers to view life in Europe before and during the Holocaust from a personal and highly unique perspective.
