Booklover, writer, blogger... if we writers don't help each other, who should?

Juana romandini

As a long-term resident in England, I am accustomed to reading almost all books in English. There is, however, that one time I need to go back to my mother tongue and decide to read a book in Italian, only to discover that the poor quality of the story is not down to the plot itself, but rather to a poorly performed translation.

I am lucky enough to have the faculty to understand that and give the book a real chance by continuing to read it in its original language, but what happens to those readers who cannot?

As a writer I know just how important it is to an author to get their book translated properly in whatever foreign language. Indeed it is often difficult to maintain the same rhythm and sense in the translation, however it is not impossible.

It's essential that a good story isn’t discarded by the readers only because of a poor translation. The pleasure of a well-written book shouldn’t be spoiled by the flaws of its translator.
