Sample text:

“Yes. I’ll have to go there at some point. I’m the chief archaeologist and team director. I’m expected to lead the research, do a press conference, things like that. But I’m not sure when yet. At least this finding may yield some resources and financing to our research. Speaking of research, how are you coming along with yours?”

I shifted on the couch. “Well, not a lot of progress since you left. But I’ll work on it to keep myself busy before coming to Greece. I saw Maggie yesterday, and she . . .” I hesitated. I shouldn’t have mentioned her. It would only upset him.

“And she what?” I sensed the haste in his answer.

“The usual. She told me to stay away from her man. You.”

A grunt interrupted an uncomfortable second of silence before he spoke again. “I’m not her man. I’ve told you this before. She thinks she owns me. She has the money we need to survive the crisis in the museum, but I’m not hers. I have business with her and her father, that’s all.”

I bit my lips. “I can’t help feeling insecure when she says it, though. She was there with you and—”

“Sabrina,” he interrupted me with a serious tone. “Did you read the card I sent you with the flowers?”

“Yes, of course, I did. Why?” I switched the phone to my other ear.

“Do you believe my words?”

I picked up the card sitting on the table and read it again before answering him.

“I want to. I need to believe your words.”
