New Can Be Scary by Joyce Olsen

Children's Life Lesson Message

New can be scary

(Book has eight short chapters with a full picture page opposite the words)

PREFACE

Children face new choices, challenges, and circumstances daily as they learn and grow. They can generally choose to try something new; other times, their new is life-changing and is not a choice. What about when a new experience becomes a MUST-DO? And there is no choice but to make it a part of their lives. How might they respond?

This book talks about how scary new can be when a child faces the reality that their "new" might not be accepted well by their peers. New Can Be Scary encourages young readers that even though new can feel scary and uncomfortable, their peers like them for who they are, not for their appearance. The book also carries a subtle anti-bullying message, inviting children to think about how they can respond to a friend or classmate struggling with something new.

Chapter 1 NEW IS EXCITING

Derek was super excited. It was the first day of first grade. He couldn't wait to see how many kindergarten friends from last year were in his class. There were so many new things to learn and new ways to have fun.

Derek would lose his front teeth, and for the first time, he would play T-ball and basketball.birthday parties with new friends.

Chapter 2 NEW IS NECESSARY

Something new was about to happen that Derek was not expecting. When he visited the eye doctor, Dr. Lee called the optometrist, Dr. Lee’s assistant, Lisa, told him he might need to wear eyeglasses for a while to help him see better. So, before Dr. Lee examined Derek’s eyes, Lisa asked Derek if he wanted to put on pretend glasses to see how he would look if he needed glasses.

Sales info:

New Can Be Scary is my first published book. It is available on Amazon. I have submitted reading copies to various libraries and have had educator interest, particularly since New Can Be Scary includes conversational questions at the end to think about how the readers or listeners would respond to a child who might look different from them.
