Let The Swine Go Forth by Auriel Roe

International school in a totalitarian state? What can possibly go wrong?

Let the swine go forth

Out of the blue, vain and naive former drama teacher, Tristram Randolph, is offered the job of headmaster at a new school in Diskebapisbad, dysfunctional capital of a despotic post-Soviet state. Little does he know-- although the signs are obvious to all but him-- that the school is the pet project of the ruthless president's spoilt daughter. Randolph hires a motley crew of teachers, each of whom embodies one of the seven deadly sins. Swineforth International, a franchise of a third rate public school in England, is built on a half-finished campus in the desert. The food is appalling and there's no escape as the foreign faculty have had their passports retained. When inspectors Swainson and Dare arrive from Swineforth in England, their grave reservations about the new school and Randolph's ability to manage it are confirmed. Matters come to a head when a revolution breaks out, the school is shut down and Randolph is accused of aiding and abetting the rebellion. His only hope now lies in winning a presidential pardon by giving the performance of a lifetime as a pantomime dame. Praise for the author's debut novel, 'A Blindefellows Chronicle'... “A sprightly, inventive novel, rich in amusing characters and situations. I enjoyed every word of it.” Tony Connor, Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature

Sales info:

My first novel, Blindefellows, was #1 in the genre catergory in Amazon UK, US and Canada and sold thousands of copies within a week. It has been saved to read by over 2,000 Goodreads members and has over 100 ratings/reviews at an average 4* on both Amazon and Goodreads. (I'm currently negotiating with my publisher to add it to this site making it available for translation.) Let The Swine Go Forth is my second novel and has just come out.  I'm hoping it will "take off" as Blindefellows did.

Sample text:

A diavola red Aston Martin DB5 rounded the corner of the street below and reversed smoothly into the VIP parking space. The driver’s door opened and there emerged from the incomparable sports car a long pair of legs swathed in Black Watch tartan and terminating in what Randolph suspected from a distance to be a pair of Manolo Blahnik court shoes. The rest of the woman followed a moment later. The trousers were part of a perfectly fitted suit and the heels elevated her to a full six feet. Her face was partly obscured by sunglasses and a fringe of dusky blonde hair but he could tell she was striking. As she swept up toward the hotel entrance, pulling off her leather driving gloves, there was a flurry of servility.

Author review:
Bruno was great to work with. He was thorough, asking me about a couple of more complicated things: the book is literary fiction and demanding even for native speakers so his level of English is impressive. It was nice to hear from him regarding how much he enjoyed the book. He completed the translation quite quickly and very independently. A very smooth experience. His finished version is very nicely done.
