5 star career advice book

Job shadowing: techniques to get maximum impact from the experience

Job shadowing is a process where you spend some time with a professional in your career field of interest, with the sole aim of being able to learn and explore career opportunities. How do you do this? How do you get job shadowing opportunities? How do you get the most from the experience?

When you job shadow, you get the best chance to see the reality of being on that job. You get to ask questions, and observe the day-to-day activities of the people involved in that career. Job shadowing can be one of THE most powerful and effective career exploration tools available.

You would greatly benefit from a job shadow situation if you are a student or considering a career change. With higher education costs soaring, learning to do a successful job shadow could save you literally thousands of dollars, a lot of time and a possible mistake in a career choice. Don't be de-railed by a career that is not right for you.

Sample text:

Job shadowing is an experience that is very eye-opening and a powerful tool in the use of career exploration.  Whether you are in high school, in college, a recent graduate, middle aged, or even into your last few years of employment, job shadowing can be an incredible tool to assist you in finding the right path for you.

Sometimes job shadowing is used within a company to cross train employees on other tasks, and other times it is used as a leadership development tool for a company.  A company may also use job shadowing to test to see if a particular employee would be a good match for a lateral type job position change.

When I was going through a phase of career search myself, this was an assignment that was given to me in a college class.  When first learning of the assignment, it sounded pretty lame to me, to be honest.  But since I actually had to DO the experience to pass the class, I was SHOCKED to see what a life changing experience job shadowing truly was!

Keep reading to learn how you too can gain the most from a job shadow opportunity.
