Chapter 1 - Why Are Friends So Important?

We send our children to school to get an academic education, but developing their social skills is of equal importance and making friends is a huge part of being happy at school and in life.

Learning how to socialize and get along with others is an essential life skill and it is important that children develop these skills at an early age and continue to build their skills throughout life.

Unfortunately some children really struggle with making and keeping friends and sometimes parents are unaware of whether their children do actually have friends or not. Having real friendships is extremely important for a child’s social and emotional wellbeing and development. It enhances their self-esteem and self-confidence and this leads to better academic performance at school. If they are having friendship problems then their world tends to turn upside down and often this has an affect on their learning as well.

Not having friends can often be the cause of many minor or major issues that they may be experiencing and it can also have a very negative impact on their enjoyment of school. Let’s face it…if they aren’t enjoying school, then they probably won’t even want to go.

To find out if your child has problems making or keeping friends, you could ask them about whom they spend time with during lunch breaks at school. Think about if they are regularly invited to other friend’s houses for a play or for sleepovers and birthday parties or whether they actually invite friends home themselves.

If not, then it’s possible that they don’t have a best friend or any friends at all.
