Apostolic Anointing The Anointing of the Apostle (Acts 3:16; 5:19; 16:18; 28:5, 8; 19:11-12; Mk. 16:15-18): Introduction: Anointing Defined: General anointing (aleiphō) is used as a general term for anointing like after washing (Ruth 3:3; 2 Sam. 12:20; Dan. 10:3; Matt. 6:17; Luke 7:38,46), anointing of the sick (Mark 6:13; James 5:14), anointing dead body (Mk 16:1), anointing pillars (Gen. 31:13) or captives (2 Chron. 28:15) or daubing a wall with mortar (Ezek. 13:10-12) and in the sacred sense of anointing priest (Ex. 40:15, Num.3:3). Sacred and Symbolical Anointing (Chriō). The word anointing (Chriō) here is restricted in meaning and usage. It is reserved to sacred things and issues: - of Christ as the anointed of God (Luke 4:18; Acts 4:27; 10:38) and in Heb. 1:9 is used figuratively or metaphorically of oil of gladness, of Christ as to the anointed one (Christos) or believers (2 Cor.1:21). - used of kings (1 Sam.10:1). - used of Priest (Ex. 28:41). - used of Prophets (1 kings 19:16). - Enchriō means to rub, to smear, to anoint is used metaphorically. These are few definitions and usages. The believers have anointing from God which makes them holy and separates them UNTO God. In Exodus 30:25, it is called holy anointing oil.
