The sun reflected brightly off the crystal blue waters of the lake’s surface; the smooth mirrored veneer was like dappled glass. Clouds dotted the sky above while a slight breeze blew through the thick growth of pines, oak, and fir that lined the water’s edge cooling the warm summer air.

The day had started like any other. Regulars were out early fishing for salmon or bass along the miles of waterways and inlets, eventually joined by other locals and tourists as the morning stretched towards midday, adding to the small crowds enjoying various water activities on and around Lake Trinity. It was a popular place for boating, water skiing, and swimming, especially during the hotter months California provided.

Families and couples gathered for afternoon cookouts along the shore. Kids and adults swam about while the occasional boat broke the calm waters with its passing wake. Even a group of campsites further down around the bend added to the crowds.

It was like the usual crowds were still sleeping, enjoying some of the last few days of summer break before school started back up. But today, there was no one.

James watched as Tyler grabbed the lip and pulled himself over the edge. He disappeared for a moment before peeking back over, a large smile spread over his face, and his eyes shined with excitement from behind a mop of sun-bleached hair.

This was it…
