The main area of interest when examining anxiety and the brain should be the limbic system. The limbic system is responsible for managing our emotions, aspects of memory, motivations, and behaviors. This complicated network is supposed to run smoothly and correctly discern between positive and negative stimulus.

 

Think of it like this, when anxious or depressed, the area of the limbic system that governs your thoughts will not be able to communicate properly with the area that governs your actions. If this only happens in short bouts, then the brain should correct itself and return to a state of normalcy. If this miscommunication between different parts of the brain were to last for a long time though, then the process of neuroplasticity will take place and start to make anxiety or depression the default state of mind. In other words, if you are stressed or depressed for too long then your brain will begin to stay stressed or depressed.
