A young man in a parka, hood up, stands smoking with his back pressed against a wall in a dimly lit lane. A car speeds around the corner skidding to a halt in the lane. The passenger door opens and a woman is flung out. The man flicks away his cigarette and walks over to the woman as the car speeds off. She is lying face down with her hair splayed in a pool of water. Her micro mini skirt is torn at the side and her stiletto heels are pointing skywards like minute church spires. Her handbag is burst open, its strap still caught around her shoulder and lipstick and condoms and some paper money and a syringe lie scattered along the lane. He lifts her up. She’s light, emaciated, cheeks drawn in. Get away from me, she shouts, get the fuck away. It’s all right, he says. She looks dazed. That bastard, she says slowly rising and under the lamplight now he can see her bruised temple. A loony bin, she says. I thought I was a goner.
