Internet Safety and Cyber Security

- Mary buys her wares and goods regularly from a particular online shop and enjoyed their services. Her address, credit card details were stored on this shop's database or server for easy and quicker transaction. Then one day she received an email assumed to have come from the online shop, claiming she'd qualified for a discount. Who wouldn't be happy? She filled in the qualification forms or discount coupons with the required details - credit card, SSN, etc. She thought it was the normal verification details demanded at each transaction. Not long some substantial amount of money was withdrawn from her bank account. The online shop noticed suspicious user from a third party. The email to Mary was fake. This type of attack is called cyber-attack and the attacker is called a hacker. The hacker used the form she filled to get her credit card details and carried out the fraudulent activity. A cyber security setup or proper internet security practices would have protected her device and account if she had one or was aware of these attacks. With chip connectivity these days of housewares, from refrigerators to spoon to doorbells and even to dog plate etc. IOTs (Initialism of Internet of things), a self-configuring wireless network between objects expose us to insecurities.

- Internet safety, e-safety or cyber safety is the act of protecting yourself, your accounts and devices from cybercrimes and attacks online. Just as we need physical locks, keys, security officers and police to minimize crime in the physical world so we need them in the virtual world to mitigate crime. You must be aware of the risks involved with online activities and employ a few strategies to prevent or avoid these risks.
