Passion for music, classic cars and History

Ricardo feres

I was born in Brazil, in 1970, the only son of teachers. My mother is a retired English Linguistics Teacher from one of the most prestigious Federal Universities in Brazil and a renowned Translator; my late father taught Natural Sciences for a few years and then worked as a lawyer. Growing in such an environment made me develop a special interest in learning other languages, so in addition to English, I got some knowledge of Spanish, Italian and French, and now I’m studying Russian and thinking about learning German!  In 1998 I got my BA in Law from Faculdade de Direito Milton Campos and I have ever since worked as a lawyer, legal consultant, public relations and legislative assistant for my Municipality, responsible for creating and writing laws.

I have been a music lover since I was a child, especially rock and roll and classical music, of which I have a very wide collection. During my teen years I developed a passion for classic cars in my mind and heart. I have a special interest for American cars made between the post war period to early 1970's. My school years made me love History, especially the History of Art and Architecture.

Translation has been natural for me in this context as very early I was urged to read a lot in English (and in some French) about those subjects and many times had to translate magazine articles, press releases, technical papers, book chapters. Currently, besides being a translator, I have also been dedicating some time to teach English!

Author review:
This translation suffered from its length. With the introduction being over 10 pages long I was unable in the early stage to detect the issues that would come up when the final book was submitted.

The book sent through the system was severely mangled. The paragraphs in the book description were in the wrong order. When translator emailed me a new copy of the book, some of the errors (noticeable the removal of all chapter headings) were fixed, but I found many more, particularly in the appendices where there are prayers and songs where it needs to be clear where something is the original text and where something is the translated text. All indicators were removed and I had to go in with the English to find paragraph breaks, titles verses lyrics, and so forth. All line spaces, underlining, and even language name indicators (all appearing in the original) were removed from the music appendix. The required topical sub-headers in the Bibliography were removed entirely and not translated as required.

I have no doubt the translator is fluent in Portuguese and the text itself is accurate Portuguese. But books are so much more than a string of text. They have to be readable and presented in a pleasing way. The structure of the translated book needs to match the original book and not be rearranged or outright deleted. The translator grossly fails at presenting a readable book. Will not hire again.
