Milena barranca

I was born in the South of Italy, in a small town by the seaside of Calabria. I've always been fascinated by music since I was very young, as far back as I can remember, and that made me love English language as well, because I like the way it sounds, and besides, I was keenly curious to understand lyrics meaning. Therefore I focused my studies on Tourism and Foreign Languages, specifically on English and Spanish. I tried to take advantage for travelling anytime I had the chance and after my GSCE I decided to move to Rome and start an academic path. This began with a three year academic course concerning Foreign Languages and Cultures at La Sapienza University, which was completed with a translation thesis made of a research and translation of articles regarding some of the filmmaking techniques (e.g. make up, screenwriting, editing) operating behind the scenes. During those years I also worked here and there, covering different professional roles; meanwhile I started to be asked for translating a number of texts of different kinds: CVs, biographies, websites, cartoon dialogues and so on, achieving good results and feedbacks all the times. I continued my studies with a two year academic Translation course. This time for my thesis I chose to work on a book that spoke about the history of jazz and blues intertwined with civil rights movement facts. I also spent a couple of months living and working in London: getting in direct touch with native speakers is a great opportunity to enhance language abilities, and in that circumstance I met a lot of nice people that really helped me in this aspect. I'm currently working part-time in a small shop which belongs to my family, thus I have the chance to carve out some time for myself, for my interest and for translating as well. My last translation work, Italian to English, has been an introduction for a short movie that tells a captivating and enchanting story about a migrant from Senegal to Italy, who survived the Mediterranean crossing and reached Italian shores in search of a better future. I would like to keep on translating and improve more and more my skills and knowledge in this field.
