Michaela carnochan

My name is Michaela and I am a freelance, German to English translator. My passion for languages has evolved from a bilingual upbringing with German and English. I have lived in the UK almost all of my life (apart from one year at university) and would therefore determine my mother-tongue as English, however I have a very sound knowledge and understanding of German. I went on to study German at university and qualified with a BA in German from the University of Kent in 2009. I then went on to specialise in translation with an MA in Translation & Linguistics from the University of Westminster in 2010. I am also an Associate of the Institute of Translation & Interpreting.
I have been working as a translator since completing my MA in 2010. My first graduate job was an in-house position at Lidl UK where my role essentially involved translating the food and non-food product labels, in addition to some other documentation. Upon leaving Lidl, I set up my own freelance translation service, which I have been providing since 2011.
A lot of my freelance work is for agencies, which has meant my workload has been particularly diverse and I am used to quick turnarounds. I generally work in a range of fields, including food & drink, agriculture, medicine & pharmaceuticals, and law. However, in addition to this I have completed a vast number of projects for direct clients, a few of which have been translations of books, which I have thoroughly enjoyed completing.

Language and, in turn, reading has been a passion of mine since a very young age. There is no greater feeling than being completely immersed in another world of a book. This passion is also one that I have managed to pass onto both my children, who are both avid readers. It would therefore be an absolute pleasure to open your book up to a wider audience through translation and to allow more people to enjoy the world you've created.
