I am a linguist with a multicultural background, speaking Hungarian, English and Dutch fluently.

I grew up in Hungary and at the age of 19, I left home and moved to the Netherlands where I studied English linguistics at the University of Leiden whilst also absorbing Dutch language and culture. After having spent 7 wonderful years in Holland, I settled in England where I have lived for the past 17 years. In 2002, I completed an MA in Social Policy and have spent a number of years working as a research fellow at the University of York. This year I have started an MA in Translation Studies at Sheffield University. I enjoy my course tremendously and I feel I have finally found my ‘calling’ as a freelance translator. I translate from English, Dutch and Hungarian into English and Hungarian. I live in York with my husband and two daughters.

From an early age, I have always had a passion for languages. I am fascinated by how different cultures view the world in different ways and how this is reflected in their language. I have a very close cultural and emotional bond with all three of my working languages, which enables me to really get to the core of the source message and translate this into the target language including its context, connotations and register. My studies at Sheffield enhanced my natural language competence with knowledge about translation theories and expertise in the use of CAT tools. My formal training combined with my language expertise help me to produce consistently high quality translations with a lot of attention to detail.

Skills and Knowledge:

• Language of habitual use: English.
• Fluent in Dutch.
• Excellent writing skills acquired through a career in academia.
• Excellent IT skills, as an academic, I used to write statistical algorithms. Very quick on the uptake when learning how to use new software packages.
• Proficient in Word, Excel, Power Point, Wordfast, MemoQ, SDL Trados.
• Formal training in linguistics and translation theories and techniques.
• Great attention to details such as spell-check, layout and formatting when finishing final product.
• Reliable and consistent in delivering high quality work.
