My passion for languages reflects throughout my biography. When I was 14, I entered a college in Austria with the main focus on English, being taught 50% of the lessons in English in the final years. Besides that, I was also taught 5 years of Spanish, entering level B2, and 4 years in Russian, entering level B1. My language learning was accompanied by several journeys into other countries to improve my skills learnt in school, including Spain, Russia and England. Alongside school I started using my language skills to teach others and became an English and Spanish tutor for students of lower levels.
After graduating in German, Spanish and English it did not take long for me to start a University Course at the local University of Salzburg: Linguistics. I was engaged with this course for over a year, learning valuable skills regarding the structure and socio-cultural backgrounds of languages. It was at this time when I started to compare and relate English and German and academicly think about the similarities and differences of both. It was also at this time where I got accepted to a project in England, enabling me to stay in the UK for 8 months in close teamwork with locals. My understanding of German and English was increasing markedly and I started realising translations from English into German in books I read as well as films I watched, noticing the linguistic structure that was copied to the other language. Often, this made me very unsatisfied with the experience and I learnt to appreciate good translators and sychronators.
After one year of studying Linguistics I transferred my studies to Speech and Language Therapy in the North of England, which is where I live now. This has enabled me not only to continue my learning about language but also use it when dealing with people in everyday life, not to forget continue learning about the English culture as oppose to the German and Austrian culture I innate. Besides the course, my language career has thrived. I have started teaching German in language schools and privately as well as work for various interpreter companies. When my German-speaking friends visit, I translate into English for them, when my English friends show an interest into my culture, I translate into German for them. My life has become a constant switch of German and English and German. And English.
I have lived in England for around 3 years now and feel that my English has reached a point where I can compare myself to natives in many areas. Surprisingly, living in England has also improved my German - I can now much easier switch between Austrian German and German German, as it is very beneficial and in my eyes essential to be capable of German German in the role of a German teacher in England. As as student I am now on summer holidays and feel that it has become time to fulfil my dream:
