The Impossible Bet by Anna Katmore

The rules of the bet say he mustn't speak with her at all - only steal three kisses.

The impossible bet

The Wager:

Three kisses.
Two of which must be initiated by the girl—a girl my friends select for me.
I have just under two weeks.

If I win, I get the coveted role of Tristan in a stage production.
If I lose, I’m still in the play…in the worst possible way. Playing Isolde in lacy underwear is something I may never live down!

The bet should be a piece of cake—until my friends pick my conquest. My quirky new neighbor, Pippi Longstocking in pink. WTF?!

Oh, and did I mention I’m not allowed to speak to her? At. All.

“Anybody ever tell you you’re a pain in the ass?” I snarl. “Now, excuse me. I’ve gotta go dance.”

His soft brown eyes glint like exotic gems behind those black lashes. Damn it, I don’t know what it is about this look, but whenever he pulls this intense crap with me, I find I can’t move, despite every cell in my body rebelling and shouting at me to get going.

Suddenly, he braces his hands on the bar and hoists himself over it. He moves so fast that I can only gasp and stumble a step backward. With no counter between us anymore, he seems a lot taller. And irritably more real. Not like the distant guy behind the bar calling dibs with ice cubes, but more like a determined man who would do anything to steal a kiss.

“W-what—” I retreat another step as he slowly comes forward. “What are you doing?”

He reaches for my hand, and I’m simply too slow to pull it away. Closing his fingers around mine, he keeps me near him, but he doesn’t stop walking. I don’t know what’s behind me—people, furniture? All I can do is trust him and hope he doesn’t lead me right into any obstacles.

We stop in the middle of the room. His eyes firmly on me, he places my hand behind his neck.

“You want to dance?” I blurt out, incredulous, and jerk my arm away.

Jace nods and, just as fast, recaptures my hand—actually both of them now. He puts them around his neck again, and this time he runs his own palms down my arms to settle on my hips.

“No freaking way!” I snap at his face, before turning and stomping off to find Jeremy, who I actually want to dance with. Only, I don’t get very far. Three steps in total. Because Jace grips my wrist and hauls me back to him, twisting me along his arm until I bump into his chest.
