The ocean surf advanced and receded along the darkened beach with patterned regularity, as the soft voices of the waves whispering to the disheveled man a promise of comfort and eternal peace. Staggering through the sand to the water’s edge like a wayward toddler returning to his mother’s arms, the man approached the shore with determination, yet hesitated as he stepped into the foam.

An anonymous death — that was what he craved more than anything else. He reached into his back pocket and pulled his wallet out. As he examined the driver’s license, he saw a handsome and strong-willed young man staring back at him with eyes filled with unshakable confidence. It was hard to fathom that he had once been that man, and that the photo had not been taken so very long ago.

Frowning, he angrily threw the wallet as far as he could into the surging waves. He could not bear the thought of the news headlines triumphantly heralding his face, name, and unusual demise throughout the world — not after what he had been through already.

Unsteadily, he stripped off his clothes then stood naked, facing the water. Closing his eyes, he took one last breath before striding purposefully, step by step, into the churning tide.

That’s all they’ll find, he thought, just a body — another shell washed ashore – just some homeless drunk to be tagged and bagged, and incinerated at the state’s expense. They won’t even know who I was.

He smiled in satisfaction at this final thought as the salty water sprayed his face and mingled with his tears. Plunging his body into the vast, welcoming water of the Gulf of Mexico, Jerry Markley’s spirit soared free, and he felt joy for the first time since before the events that had destroyed his life had happened just a matter of months prior to his final plunge into the void.
