You don’t have to wait until you’re ready to cook to start cutting and dicing your ingredients. This is especially so if you plan to leave the food cooking in the morning. You can prepare your ingredients the evening before to make your work easier in the morning. You can even place all your ingredients in the slow cooker and place it covered in the fridge. However, if you do this, remember to wait at least 20 minutes after removing it from the fridge before turning it on.

Some people find it useful to prepare ‘freezer dump meals’ that can serve them for weeks. You can take a day, say Sunday, and prepare all the foods you will be using during the week. The good thing with freezer dump meals is that you can put all the ingredients in one Ziploc bag. All you will have to do once you’re ready to cook is thaw the ingredients and dump them in the crockpot. If you’ll be using any liquids such as stock, it is best to store the liquids separately and add them to the crockpot during cooking.

Many times, there is no need to add any oil to your slow cooker. However, some foods such as meat come with their own fat. Remember, when you fry your meat, you normally end up scooping it out of the pan and leaving the grease behind. This does not happen when you are using a slow cooker. The best you can do is scoop out the fat once you’re done cooking or just trim the fat before placing your ingredients in the slow cooker. Fat is not bad but it can make your food unappealing especially when it is all over the food.
