Sample text:

“Relax.” Special Agent Daniel Cooper drew out the one-word piece of advice and smiled at his partner. “Glaring at that screen won’t make the warrant come through any faster.” His Texas drawl gave the words an almost hypnotic cadence.

“I hate stakeouts.” Special Agent Megan Luchek’s muttered declaration almost disappeared in the hot, sticky air. Long strands of light brown hair were escaping the pins and ties she’d used to contain them. They fell onto the back of her neck, making her miserable.

“What’s that? You love this? I’ll let SAC Maddox in on that little secret.”

“You heard me.” She lifted her glare from the tablet screen long enough to bestow part of it on her chipper partner. Her neck started to itch, so she took a few seconds to fix her hair. “I swear the more miserable the conditions, the cheerier you get.”

“This state ain’t got nothin’ on a good-old Texas meltdown,” Cooper replied. “Besides, it’s kinda fun watching you squirm.”

“I do not ‘squirm,’” Megan protested, shifting uncomfortably in her seat.

Cooper lifted his eyebrows in an I-told-you-so expression.

“That one was your fault. Power of suggestion.” Just to give her hands something to do, Megan fixed the wilting mass of hair she’d bullied into a half-ball, half-bun-like thing at the back of her head. She tended to think of her days by how many twists she put in her hair. A three-twist updo was reserved for meetings with the boss-man, court, and other such confrontations. Stakeouts rated two twists. Casual occasions warranted a single or a half-twist.

Her personal cellphone beeped from the center cup holder where she’d thrown it hours ago at the start of this hurry-up-and-wait exercise.
