Sample text:

When one has a low level of self-esteem, he lacks basic respect for others.  He can be intolerant of people and wishes they would live the way he think they should live.  Such a person believes that people should alter their behavior in accordance with his because he unconsciously considers their acceptance of his code of conduct as violations of himself. Even if others’ behavior does not affect him, he sometimes becomes angered if it conflicts with his moral standards and rules he lives by.  Driven by a compulsive need for confirmation, he blames, complains, moralizes, and becomes outraged, intolerant, and bigoted.  He then is rigid, inflexible, and demanding in his relationships with others.

He is typically so highly concerned with himself that he has little time to think about anything or anyone else.  If he should think of others it is usually in question of how they think about him.  Do they like him and if not, why not?

A person with low self-esteem is likely to sabotage his own personal relationships.  Unsure of himself, he frequently feels insecure and uncomfortable around others.  Rather than being friendly, he might act shy, embarrassed, angry, or defensive.  Since feelings of unworthiness prevent him from enjoying of the pleasures of mutually fulfilling relationships, he is apt to become lonely and filled with self-pity.
