Sample text:

My stomach dropped onto the cold pavement.

“We're boxed in.” Michael flared his claws at his sides as if to ready them. Amber fur sprouted from the tips of his fingers and flowed in a wave up his forearm to his elbow, where it tapered off. His hands tripled in size and black paw pads appeared on his palms and fingertips. The lion signet ring vanished into his finger, showing no signs of being constrictive even though his finger was now thicker than the whole ring. From the elbow, his forearm widened and his muscles bulged beneath his short fur.

He had shapeshifted only his hands and arms.

“What do we do?” I asked, doing my best to squash the quiver from my voice. I had gotten us into this mess. What had I just done?

“We go forward.” Michael's voice was a barely recognizable growl. “It's the only way.”

“We can't retreat?” I squinted into the darkness behind us, desperately seeking any signs of the trap Michael was talking about. The street behind us was empty: only parked cars, trash cans, and quiet houses. There was nobody there.

“No.” He shook his head beside me and turned to walk ahead. “They're there to push us forward.”

He got far enough away from me while I'd been watching behind that I had to jog to catch up. “Push us where?”

“Nowhere good.”
