Before we get into the details of mindset, it’s important for you to understand the mental states that are most productive. It has been shown that the “alpha state” is most helpful for visualizing and working. (I’ll explain more later in the book.) The alpha state is the balance between meditation and being fully alert, and it’s the most effective level of brain frequency. This state creates a space for the clearest thinking, as well as relieving stress, so you can fully engage in your task without becoming stressed. Being in the alpha state will help you focus, which is a key factor for a productive mind.

To get into the alpha state, I recommend meditating in the morning before you start your day. Personally, I do a quick ten- to fifteen-minute yoga session in the morning that concludes with a three-minute meditation. That way, I start my day with exercise, meditation, and a clear and focused mind. But you can skip straight to the breathing exercises described in the Daily Routine section if you are short on time.

The best brain state for learning is the “theta state.” It is also known as the “sponge” mode because it enables us to absorb everything around us. Children are often in the theta state. That’s why they are able to learn new skills so fast. So if you are learning something new, it’s a good idea to get into the theta state. You can do that by getting consistently good sleep and focusing your mind on one subject. In addition, when you are in the alpha state for longer periods, you will naturally transition into the theta state.
