Sample text:

If you have been putting off the suggestion to keep one please reconsider that choice. The desire to change and improve oneself is a private affair. A journal helps keep it that way. Talking too much about your plans all too often has the odd effect of taking some of the wind out of your sails and encourages unnecessary input and opinions from unqualified people. Writing in your journal instead of bragging about your intentions is a good alternative.

Your journal will also be where you work out your plan, make notations throughout the day and provide inspiration when you feel the need for it. It doesn't have to be fancy or complicated, just about anything you can write in and keep with you most of the day will work fine. I prefer the note taking app on my phone or those tiny marble covered notebooks which can be easily obtained from any office supply store.

In the next chapter, we will discuss the importance of a plan and how to go about charting your course for improvement, something that will be far easier to do if you are already keeping a journal. It may be tempting to think that you can remember everything you need to without writing it down. Resist this impulse, the value of the journal is more than just a place for things you don't want to forget, it is a symbol of your desire to live a more productive and successful life.
