Orissa - parte i

India, late nineteenth century. Two bandits break into a hut around midnight, and without explanation, murder the gravedigger who sleeps inside. Then they set fire to the construction with his son inside and disappear without a trace. In spite of everything, the young pariah manages to escape miraculously from the flames and to save his life. Stunned and confused, the child arrives at an old abbey nearby, whose monks soon pity him and offer him shelter.
During the following years, Nagesh grows under the protection of religious, from whom he receives food and a good education. However, his peaceful monastic life fails to mitigate the cravings for vengeance that from that night appear in his head. On the other hand, a very difficult desire to perform, since from the very first day, and without revealing the motives, the bishop who directs the congregation forbids Nagesh to set foot outside the monastery.
Little by little, the veto will become increasingly unbearable, especially after a furtive break, Nagesh meets Shefali, a beautiful Hindu girl who sells flowers at the market. But the bishop can no longer yield, he fears that the boy will discover the sickly secret that holds the past and, with it, the designs that show the books, temples and constellations that enlighten the sky finally come true.

La abadía es, en realidad, un conjunto de pequeñas edificaciones unidas entre sí alrededor de un patio central y separadas del exterior por un grueso muro de piedra. Fue construida varios siglos antes de que sirviese de fortaleza militar al ejército mogol casi doscientos años atrás, en su época de mayor expansión y prosperidad. Cuando ese gran imperio empezó a derrumbarse, los británicos se hicieron con su control y comenzaron a usar el emplazamiento con fines militares inicialmente, y religiosos más tarde. De ese modo, se fundó en su interior un pequeño monasterio para emplazar a algunos de los primeros beatos que llegarían a la región pocos meses después. Así se produjo el asentamiento de un nuevo credo que se unía a la inmensa amalgama de religiones ya existentes en el subcontinente, con la innegable voluntad de abrirse camino entre ellas.
