I was born in a wealthy Egyptian family one stormy night. According to my father it was not a good sign from the gods. Egyptians believed in magic and almost every man woman and child in Egypt who could afford it wore a charm or talisman.

Egyptians were at a very early period regarded as a nation of magicians and sorcerers. The Hebrew, Greek and Roman referred to us as experts in the occult sciences and as the possessors of powers which could, according to circumstances, be employed to do either good or harm to man.

As soon as I was old enough my parents hired a famous old sorcerer to teach me magic spells and potions. She was the one who taught my two sisters and brother. Her name is Akana and I think she likes me better than my siblings.

“Good morning Nailah! Did you practice the spells last night?”

“Yes I did and they were all successful.”

“I am proud of you child you are so young and yet you are the best student I ever had.”

“Thank you Akana, I like magic very much. I want to be a powerful sorcerer like you when I grow up.”

“The way magic embraces you I don’t doubt you are going to be even more power than I am Nailah. Mark my words.”

Somehow I felt important with Akana’s words hoping she was right. When the lessons were over and she left. I heard my mom’s voice.

“Is time to pick up your new crown Nailah!” My mom shouted from our music room.

“Okay mom I am coming!”

Today was a very special day the gold snake ankh crown was ready. It had Isis the goddess of nature and magic holding a winged Scarab beetle.
