Sample text:

For now, the situation was under control. I hadn’t insinuated anything illegal yet, and Erik hadn’t said anything compromising. But that wasn’t enough. Erik needed to understand that I knew more than I had let on so far.

“There’s one thing that puzzles me, and I’m speaking as a police officer now. You get up in the middle of the night to send faxes. You have to admit, that seems strange. One could almost think you’re doing something shady.”

“You’re spying on me, your own brother?”

Erik raised his voice, making Lady, who was lying at his feet, jump up.

“I can’t help but hear and see things,” I said, almost apologetically.

“Hear and see what, exactly?” my brother retorted, his tone sharp.

What does someone spying for a foreign power do when they realize they’ve been discovered? The knife was still within reach on the kitchen counter. Erik would only have to stretch out his arm to grab it. He could dispose of my body during the night and then report my disappearance. But I couldn’t back down now. I had to stay on the offensive until the end.

“I know you send faxes in the middle of the night. Maybe you could explain that to me?”

Suddenly, it seemed like all the air had been sucked out of my brother. He slumped in his chair, his back hunched, his arms hanging loosely. We sat in silence for a few minutes before I heard his voice again.

“It’s a long story.”

Would he say more? Erik had to find a way to start.

“I’m all ears. We can stay here all night if necessary.”
