What Is Meditation?

Meditation is an ancient practice that is said to have originated in India. Monks and gurus would make use of it to avail a peace of mind and keep the various mental and physical illnesses at bay. Meditation then spread to china and subsequently to the European countries and today, it is practiced universally by people of all caste, creed, and religion. Meditation mainly involves sitting and training the mind to do as is instructed, in order to gain control over it and the body alike.

What Is Its History?

The history of meditation traces back to 1500 BCE, where evidences of Hindu priests engaging in “Dhyana” were found. Dhyana refers to a state of trance, where the person concentrates on nothing but mind control and makes use of it to avail control over the various organs in the body.

In the 6th century BCE, the practice is said to have travelled to Taoist China and it was recognized and adopted by the Buddhists. In 1227, the Japanese travelled to China and took the art back with them to Japan, where it gained immense popularity. Today, meditation is practiced by thousands of people including commoners and celebrities.
