There are many different benefits of using meditation, and many of them have to do with the body. We talked a little bit in the previous chapter about how meditation helps improve mental health, but I want to focus on the rest of the body in this chapter. 

It is my hope that between the previous chapter and this chapter, you will see that there are so many benefits of meditation that if you are not practicing it on a regular basis, you are really missing out. 

I have already talked a lot about how meditation can help reduce the stress in your life. However, I have not gone into detail about how it can affect your overall health, and I feel that this is the most important effect on the body and should be discussed first. 

Many people believe that we are seeing a surge in diseases today because of the amount of stress that people are under and they may be right. Stress is how our bodies react to changes in our lives. The changes may be positive or negative and yet our body tends to react in the same way. Stress affects a person’s mental well-being as well as the physical body. 

Think about the last time you were overly stressed. I’m not talking about regular day to day stress; I am talking about reaching your breaking point. How did your body feel? Maybe you had a severe headache, or your vision blurred, maybe your heart rate increased dramatically, or you may have broken out in hives. 

Every person you know has a different way of responding to stress. Some people hold it all in, which often leads to physical responses, such as hives, while others have no problem letting it all out, even if it manifests as anger.
