Sample text:

The first is to cultivate maitri. The second is to spread maitri. Maitri is cultivated within oneself. Through this exercise, one’s mind becomes rich in thoughts of loving kindness and creates enhancement of such wholesome thoughts. The fundamental aim in maitri meditation is to develop this ability in one’s own mid. This has to be done with focus on oneself alone. If we truly develop loving kindness to ourselves, our mind will not permit any unwholesome thoughts that would defile to gain entry into our mind.it helps in the effort to conceal the chances for any evil thoughts to arise in the mind. Unwholesome thoughts that arise in the mind could be prevented by developing good thoughts. Those good thoughts when converted into thoughts of loving kindness develop into metta volitions. Thereby a prime feature of metta meditation is also successfully fulfilled.

According to metta meditation, one must first develop loving kindness to oneself. We could focus on the meditation topic given to us by our meditation instructors. We are generally accustomed to chanting “May I be well! May I be happy! May I be free of illness!” and so on. Although there is no fault in this, the meditation topic indicated by the pali verses is more appropriate.
