In other words, if at some point your neck or your back starts to bother you – move!  I’m not watching what you’re doing.  My eyes are closed during the meditations I lead you in; I don’t follow a script.  So, no one’s watching you, no one’s grading you, no one’s doing anything.  It’s just you with you, and so in whatever way you can make yourself feel comfortable, just be comfortable.

If you are sitting on a chair and your feet can reach the floor, then it’s better to have your feet flat on the floor so you’re stable.  Crossing them is not ideal. Your hands are in your lap facing up or down, it doesn’t matter.  If you start to cough – cough!  But muffle it so you don’t scare the living daylights out of the person next to you if they are off in an altered state somewhere. (Laughter)

But don’t try to suppress the cough the whole time and then the whole ten or fifteen minutes that we’re doing this exercise all you’re doing is sitting there suppressing a cough, missing the whole exercise, blaming your cough, blaming yourself, blaming your mother, blaming me, blaming the place, I don’t know whatever – missing the opportunity to be in the meditation.  That doesn’t serve you. (Laughter)

So be comfortable.  If you get really comfortable and start falling asleep, usually because you are in a chair you’ll fall over slightly and wake yourself up.  If you do start snoring, the person next to you has the right to very gently nudge you because you’re probably disturbing them.  And if you choose to fall over, fall over quietly and comfortably and get out of everybody’s way.
