Finding a Seeker

Lenora Schmidt stood in the driveway staring at the house, dreading going in.  This house had been her home for twenty years, but she knew it would be no longer.  Not after she delivered the news to her father.  She sighed deeply, fighting her desire to run and warring with herself inside.

“He’s going to blow his top, you know that,” she told herself.  “He’s going to go bat shit crazy and somebody will pay the price, probably me.  I’ll be lucky if he doesn’t kill me outright.  I should run while I can.  Hell, I should never have come home at all.  No, I owe them this much; Mom, at least.  Okay, stay sharp, keep a clear path to the door, and face the music.  He’s going to blame you for this and you know it.”

Her father was a violent man, always had been, given over to fits of temper.  He’d managed to stay out of prison because mostly he took out his rage on his wife and children, primarily Lenora.  She, on the other hand had spent much of her young life learning how to duck, lie, hide, and whatever else it took to avoid the beatings.  This time she knew there was no way out for her except to run, and that would leave her mother to take the beating.  She squared her shoulders and stepped through the door.

“Lenora, you’re back,” exclaimed her mother.  “Wilson, she’s back.”

“You’ve been gone for weeks,” said a heavyset man in his mid-forties.  “Did you find Belinda?”  Belinda was Lenora’s younger sister, the apple of her father’s eye, and she’d been missing for months.

“Yes,” Lenora replied softly, staying close to the door.  “I found her.”
