Rob excused himself from the meeting as his phone vibrated in his pocket. Nobody ever called him and he wondered what would cause someone to ring him up over and over again like that.

“Rob Marshall,” he said as he answered.

“Rob, it’s me. You have to get to the school now!”

“Honey, slow down. What’s wrong?”

“It’s Alex! Oh my God. Oh my God!”

“Gina, for God’s sake, what is it?”

“Alex is gone, Rob. They can’t find him and...” Gina’s voice seemed to trail off. Rob realized that he had dropped his phone and he picked it up.

“I’m on my way.” He didn’t wait for an answer and hung up as he sped toward the elevator. After he repeatedly pressed the button in vain, he headed for the stairs. His body barely kept up with his feet as they thundered down the stairs, flight after flight. By the time Rob reached his car, the sound of his racing heart pulsated in his head. He fumbled with his keys and he had barely turned over the engine before the car was in gear, headed toward parking garage exit.

Rob drove as fast as he could. He didn’t care if he broke any laws. He had to get to the school as fast as he could. He weaved his way through the traffic as best as he could and ignored the angry car horns as he sped past them. Each bend in the road pushed and pulled his body from side to side. Rob wasn’t sure if he passed by any police cars along the way, but he wouldn’t have stopped if he did. He would have let them throw on their sirens and clear a path for him, consequences be damned.

Rob arrived at the school and yanked the keys out of the ignition before he ran through the front doors. He sprinted toward the office and almost collided with his wife and the principal as he turned a corner.
