PILOT TRAINING

Cadet Joe Devlin walked toward the hangar exit of the air dock. The heat of the day was already filling the air. Joe was wearing a lightweight flightsuit, having just removed his pilot gear. His upper collar and lower back were sweat-soaked and warm from wearing the bulky gear. A small breeze blowing through the hangar failed to cool him off.

Joe's X5 Viper Star Fighter was being refueled and readied for the next day’s flight. He had just completed a key training mission and his emotions were overflowing with feelings of achievement. Since being switched from a navigator to a cadet pilot, he had spent the last six months flying extra flights to catch up to his classmates. It had been physically and mentally demanding on him; however, he was finally caught up.

Joe was now halfway through his second year at the Space Academy as a Cadet Third Class and was becoming a skilled pilot. During his flight training, he out flew both the third and fourth year cadets. In a few simulated combat flights, he even beat some of the most experienced instructors.

This did not surprise most people who knew Joe, since he was the person who had almost single-handedly defeated the Tourians last year, saving the City of Dansburg. He was the first cadet to ever win the Medal of Valor and now was almost as famous as his father, Don Devlin, the Commander of the Black Aces. Commander Devlin was a legend in the Intergalactic Space Force, the ISF.
