Sample text:

Most people view small talk with a degree of disdain and believe it is good for only two things: killing time whilst waiting, and having something to do at parties. Otherwise, it’s a nuisance at best and torture at worst.

After all, once the conversational taboos of politics, religion, and sex are crossed off the small talk list, there just isn’t that much to talk about, aside from current events, weather, sports, and the latest entertainment offerings.

It doesn’t help that the name for this activity, “small talk,” implies mindless blather about nothing of significance. I mean, let’s face it small talk, isn’t going to have you delve into the philosophy of Aristotle (unless you’re at a philosophers’ convention), but something nearly everyone forgets is - small talk doesn’t have to be on topics of no value. Once you grasp this concept and get over your misconceptions of it, you see that small talk has real power.
