What is a phobia?

Phobia is an anxiety disorder. It is an intense, irrational fear of something that poses little or no real danger. There are many specific phobias. These may include Acrophobia, the fear of heights, Agoraphobia, the fear of public places, and claustrophobia, the fear of closed-in places.

Phobias are categorized as a type of tension or anxiety disorder, whereby exposure to the feared object, activity or situation can cause excessive sweating, shaking, heart palpitations, difficulty breathing, inability to think or speak clearly, and even a full-blown panic attack.

When you become anxious and extremely self-conscious in everyday public situations, you could be described as having a social phobia. Other common phobias involve tunnels, highway driving, high building, water, flying, public speaking, animals, and fear of seeing blood.

Persons with phobias try as much as possible to avoid what scares them. If they cannot, they may experience, panic and fear, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, trembling and a powerful urge to escape. You may have experienced one of these, or perhaps you are paralyzed by a number of these phobias.

The causes of some specific phobias are not known, but they sometimes run in families.
