If you want to make the best use of your crock-pot, you will have to follow some basic safety rules and tips, which are as follows:

Before using a crock-pot, spray the inside of the stoneware with nonstick cooking spray or rub with oil before using it. This will allow easy cleanup.
Keep in mind not to fill more than two-third and less than half full of the crock-pot. The safety, cooking time and quality of the food are affected by cooking either too much or too little food.
Whenever you cook the vegetables and meat combined, put the vegetables in the slow cooker first because the vegetables cook slower than poultry and meat. Transfer the meat on top of the vegetables and then pour the liquids like water, sauce or broth.
For the first hour, set your crock-pot on high and afterwards, switch the heat setting to low in order finish cooking.
If you are cooking grains, like rice or pasta, add them at the end of the cooking process, otherwise they will become mushy. It is a useful tip to cook them separately or put them at the end just before serving.
In order to avoid curdling, add cream, cheese and milk during the last hour.
You cannot put the frozen meat directly in the crock-pot. You must defrost the meat and poultry in the fridge before cooking it in the crock-pot.
