Chapter One

Moose Ranch ~ Northern Ontario, Canada

“So help me, if you ate the rest of that cake there is going to be hell to pay!” JJ muttered as she pushed open the mudroom door and stomped barefoot down the stairs, fully intent on giving Dan hell.

But the soft mooing of cattle from the nearby corrals and the gentle caress of the warm mid-May late afternoon lake breeze that whispered over her took the edge off her anger. As she marched behind the two-story ranch house, she spied Dan rototilling the dark soil for their vegetable garden and she blew out a tense breath as awareness snapped through her.

He looked all hot, sweaty and sexy shirtless pushing that machine. Suddenly the idea of chastising him for sneaking off with the cake just didn't seem so important.

The instant he spied her approaching, he leaned over and shut the rumbling machine. Hard muscles flexed and popped in his biceps as he whipped off his cowboy hat, grabbed a red handkerchief out of his jean back pocket and wiped perspiration off his forehead.

“What’s the matter?” he asked with a furrowed brow as she neared him. He must have recognized she was a tad pissed off and, yeah, totally aware of him too.

“Did you eat the rest of the cake?” she asked. She tried to keep the anger out of her voice but it was hard to do.

Goodness, Dan had an appetite, and JJ was finding it very hard to keep anything sweet stocked in that ranch house with three ravenous men eating her desserts just as fast as she baked them.
