His eyes adjusted to the blackness and an unexpected smell of bleach hit his nostrils.

The man soon realised what someone had needed it for. Disagreeable cat poo odour drifted in the air.

A trace of light fell in from the cellar window, making the stairs noticeable, which were heading up to the primary part of the house. The door at the top of the stairs was open. Probably for the cat.

He smirked. Perfect.

Cape Town’s streetlights lit up the first floor. The man walked along the corridor which led to the living room with its wide arches and large windows. He was thoughtful not to walk into anything.

The walls were white and covered with some contemporary designs. The sort where one had to speculate what it was and if, maybe a five-year-old child had painted it. A modern glass jar, formed from numerous sections, standing on a small designer table, held artificial grass and some wooden apples. It was a pleasant environment. The man could see himself lying down on the couch and watching some Netflix movies.

He strode into the dining room and glanced at the family portraits on the counter. Next to it was an LG flat screen screwed to the wall. But he had more vital concerns than exploring a home that wasn’t his.

The stairs squeaked when the intruder walked upstairs to the next level, but Patrick Lewin was fast asleep. He wouldn’t notice anything until it was too late.

The man walked softly down the laminated hall. He thrust down the bright metal handle, and the door to Lewin’s bedroom opened.
