So why this method is so important when comes to fighting anxious thoughts? To be mindful means to be fully aware of the present moment. Living in the present moment means that you are fully aware that anything that happened in the past remains there and that the moment you are now in, is brand new and utterly unaffected by what happened. No, worrying about your partner cheating on you just like it happened in the past relationship (with a different partner) does not mean that it will happen again. So instead to be present at this moment and enjoy with your loved one, you create impossible scenarios how he or she will do the same thing to you, and you will end up hurt. This is just an example that applies to many other situations you had in your life. Next time you catch yourself having never-ending anxious thoughts, deliberately stop yourself. Focus on your breathing, notice all the sounds around you, see the people that are in front of you, observe the weather, and become fully aware of the moment you are in. When you shift your focus to something else, even for fifteen seconds, you are entirely detaching yourself from the previous negative and worrying thoughts. Make this your practice until it becomes a habit.
