I can remember my first panic attack.  I was 11-years-old and it felt like the world was imploding around me.  All the classic symptoms were there—shortness of breath, chest pains, fear of death, fear of the unknown, fear that I would always feel like this, stomach pain, and cold hands.  Of course I didn’t know it was a panic attack at the time. How would I? Like many families, mine didn’t even touch the subject of mental health or emotions. Constantly complaining about my symptoms would have been met with a dismissive phrase, such as “you’re fine” or “stop being dramatic.”  So I continued moving through life feeling this way and kept it to myself for the most part. Although I in no way blame my family for my anxiety or depression, this dynamic and not having the emotional vocabulary to express what I was experiencing created the perfect storm for the anxiety to continue.

 

Many people are genetically predisposed to anxiety and depression, but it may never manifest for them in their lifetimes.  For those of us that do get hit with anxiety and depression, however, there is usually an event or set of conditions that activates the symptoms.  My activating event was the death of my beloved grandfather when I was 11-years-old. I was a sensitive and possibly intuitive child to begin with, but this was my first experience with loss.  My grandfather and I had a special connection: My grandfather was my favorite relative and I’m pretty sure I was his favorite grandchild. His death left an empty, cold silence in my family that I had no idea how to process.
