Sample text:

In the back of the taxi on their way to the bus station, Rick sat next to Neva staring blankly out the side window. Neva sensed that he’d withdrawn into his own private world after they’d left the café. Maybe it hadn’t been such a great idea encouraging him to talk about things of the heart. He’d kept his feelings under lock and key for too long to just open up and talk about them. Surely it hadn’t been easy for him to divulge them to a stranger. So much tragedy had visited this poor man in such a short space of time. Three people very dear to his heart, all gone, violently ripped from his life.

She had known similar sorrow, and like him, she too had locked it away inside. Sitting next to him, she seriously questioned whether it had helped him at all to revisit such terrible memories.

When they arrived at the bus station, they were informed that the administrator in charge had gone out to lunch, but that he should be back any minute. The any minute turned out to be forty minutes.

The administrator was a tall balding man with a large nose and bad complexion. When he saw Neva approach him, she could feel his eyes all over her body. She didn’t waste any time showing him her DIRIN ID, identifying her as an agent of the Inteligencia de la Policía Nacional. His salacious smile instantly dissolved into a sober frown.

“How can I help you, agente Morales?” he asked very formally, while at the same time trying to be pleasant, but having trouble carrying it off.

“We would like to look at your passenger manifests dating back a few weeks,” Neva said with equal solemnity.

“I’m afraid that I will need to get authorization from the general manager.”

“My uncle, General Morales Pereira, contacted him this morning, so if you wish to give your general manager a call, we can wait."
