You are to go to Earth, Tamara. I know you hate humans, but you need to remember, with gifts come responsibilities. Remember Rogan, an angel gifted like you. Nevertheless his gifts help no one. His selfishness has turned him rotten. Don’t let bitterness corrupt you; instead, devote yourself to your duties. You do me proud. Master of All is pleased, and I, High Chairman Yimkakra, God of the Skies, have complete faith in you. Now go to earth. Protect the humans. Maybe one day you will see what makes them worthy of protection.

Tamara opened her eyes, slowly sat up, and looked around. She was in a grassy clearing with nothing but a few scant trees for miles. A puff of green smoke caught her attention. “Tartu, you’re awake.” She stroked the green baby dragon. “Don’t look at me like that; it takes a while to gain consciousness in a semi-mortal body.” Tartu’s silver eyes got rounder. Since he didn’t want his master upset, Tamara smiled. He relaxed, curled his body along her upper arm, and in a shimmer of light became a tattoo.

Tamara stared at the tattoo. Anyone who looked would just see a green, scaly dragon. Tartu was small enough to hold in your palm but he could transform into a bigger, stage two dragon. He had hit stage two early because of his skill level. Stage three was adulthood. The last stage was five; those dragons were hundreds of feet tall—their wings were wider than the estates of many royals and nobles combined. The final stage had two disadvantages; the dragon could no longer shift, and the dragon and its rider became permanently linked. If the rider died, so did the dragon. In Riven that wasn’t a problem but on Earth…

Tamara got to her feet and started walking. In human form, she could walk many miles swiftly and without trouble; nevertheless, she needed to keep herself nourished. She would need food soon.
