Prologue
The sound of a single gunshot rings through my mind every time I think of her. The sound reminds me of the second that I sat helplessly in my mother’s car after her life unexpectedly came to an end. My mind replays those last few moments of the life that I shared with her, as I sit in the backseat of a taxi on my way to the airport, where I will begin a new life in a country that I do not know. At the time I didn’t know that very second would be the second that would change my life forever.
Chapter One
It was a Friday night when it happened. My mother was taking me to my aunt’s house so that she could go to a nightclub with some of her old friends. She didn’t go out very often, so this was a big deal to her. I was thirteen, nearly fourteen years old, and I didn’t think that I needed a babysitter. My mother, on the other hand, didn’t ever leave me alone. She said that it wasn’t that she didn’t trust me, she didn’t trust other people. Our neighbors were robbed the week before, so I supposed that she was right.
My father and mother were never married. They lived together until I was three. That was the year that he was deported to South America. My mother told me that when it happened, she was glad that it did. She had been trying to get out of the relationship with him since I was born. She said that he was very jealous and if she so much as said “hello” to another man in front of him, he would beat her when they came back home.
