Intermittent fasting is the ancient secret of health. The reason it is ancient is that it has been practiced throughout all of human history. I also call it a secret because this powerful habit has been virtually forgotten. But now many people are rediscovering this dietary intervention.

Intermittent fasting is presently one of the world’s most popular health and fitness trends. It involves alternating cycles of fasting and eating. Many studies have proved that it can cause weight loss, increased metabolic health, protect against diseases and causes you to live longer.

We can simply define intermittent fasting an eating pattern where you cycle between periods of eating and fasting. It doesn’t say anything about which foods to eat, but rather when you should eat them. We have various intermittent fasting methods, all of which split the day or week into eating periods and fasting periods. Despite what you may think, intermittent fasting is fairly easy to do. Hunger is usually not that a big issue, although it can be a problem in the beginning, while your body is getting used to not eating for extended periods of time.

Many times people have this misconception that fasting is starvation, but it is not. One crucial way that fasting differs from starvation is control. Starvation is the involuntary absence of food. It is neither deliberate nor controlled. Fasting, on the other hand, is the voluntary withholding of food for spiritual, health, and other reasons. Food is easily available, but you make a choice not to eat it. This can be done for any period (hours, days, and even weeks).

You may begin a fast at any time of your choice, and you may fast at will too. You can also chose to end a fast for any reason or no reason at all. When it comes to fasting, there is no standard duration, as it is merely the absence of eating.
