A few miles away Dr. Eizenheim, a geneticist, works on a project to block four types of creativity, which she believes threaten political peace in the Western Hemisphere. The Head Employee at the ElCompany acts unprofessionally that day and James suspects something is up. What could have gone wrong? James had just come to work. It was time to feed Mulder.

“Hey, buddy! Where are ya?” he yelled, as he was pouring granules into a big round dish. “Breakfast’s here!”

Finally, the noise in his ears had stopped. He picked up the humming of the plant instead, high pitched but gentle sounds of electricity moving through the lines, fine streams of ultrasounds he at first hated, but later grew to enjoy.

What he was supposed to hear, though but didn’t, were Mulder’s paws tapping on the floor. He could hear those everywhere in the main building, no matter the distance. But that morning there were none. His stomach turned.

James hurried to make sure there was nothing out of the ordinary in the plant. He examined the control room, spacious and round, finished in off-white ceiling to floor, which made it even brighter when the lights came on as soon as he entered. The panel on the wall to his left was illuminated by the colored light of the control sensors. He breathed in the familiar scent of electricity that felt like a gentle cut through his nostrils. At last, he looked into the adjacent office, then stormed out the door.

He ran up the covered passage that connected Mulder’s house to the plant.

“Come on, boy, it’s time to eat!” James’ voice cracked as he pushed the door labeled HEAD EMPLOYEE open and entered the large room.
