The Red Triangle of Death is one of the most misread warnings in hybrid ownership. On a Prius dashboard it looks final, an orange exclamation mark inside a red triangle usually paired with the Check Hybrid System message. Most owners assume the car is done. In practice, that icon is closer to a Check Engine light for the high-voltage system: the computer has detected an anomaly, but the anomaly has not been named yet. Naming it is the first step.
A standard Prius or Lexus RX will often ride on a degraded NiMH pack long before the triangle appears, revealed only as weak acceleration, a sudden drop in MPG, or the cooling fan behind the rear seat running at full speed to keep an overheating pack alive. By the time the warning illuminates, one of three codes is usually waiting in the controller: P0A80 for pack replacement, P0A93 for inverter cooling, or P0AA6 for a high-voltage isolation leak. Each one points at a different repair.
The worst thing an owner can do at this stage is clear the error codes before anyone has pulled a scan. That erases the Freeze Frame Data: the snapshot of voltages, temperatures and battery behavior at the moment of the fault. Without it, no diagnostician can cleanly separate a failing main pack from a cooling-loop issue or an isolation breach.
A deeper failure mode is deep discharge. If a hybrid sits unused for a month, or is driven until the fuel tank is dry, the electric motor will pull the traction pack below its safe floor. Jump-starting does not work on a 200-to-400-volt system. Recovery requires specialized bench equipment to bring the cells back up under supervision, and even then only if the internal modules have not taken permanent chemical damage.
William Miller handles this work out of Glen Ellyn, IL. His shop, Illinois Hybrid Batteries, offers two clear paths once the diagnosis is in: a new OEM pack for long-term ownership, or a remanufactured pack rebuilt from individually stress-tested, capacity-matched modules. Which one is correct is a measurement question, not a sales question.
