I got lucky and received english classes but I truly began to learn while translating songs I liked, reading and hearing real and meaningful phrases that included methaphors, slang, insults and even dirty talk. Later with the internet I had access to comic books and other written resources that were rarely available in spanish, I began to read entire books in english as well as having and witnessing an infinity of conversations between real people in forums and videos... and porn, of course, it deserves to be mentioned too, both written and spoken.
Anyway, as time went by I got very confident of my translations since I rarely fall into the artificial repetition of text-book sentences that always makes us cringe, particularly when doing it from english to spanish I always do my best to avoid them like the plague and making sure that it all sounds natural while retaining the meanings and original intentions.
