Hello!
Born from an English mother and a French father, I've spoken both languages since I was a child. I have lived in France most of my life, but my entire family, apart from my father, comes from the North of England. I have always been captivated by languages, and also studied German and Russian during my literary baccalaureate. I then went on to study English and American litterature, history and linguistics for my Bachelor's degree. The natural path following my Bachelor's degree was to move on to teaching. After completing the first year of a Master's degree in sociolinguistics, where I became captivated by different levels of speech and the link between culture (and social class) and language, I realised that teaching was not for me. Although I found what I learned invaluable, this career path did not suit me. I left France for Australia where I lived for two years. Upon my return, I realised that I could combine my passion for languages and sociolinguistics by becoming a translator.
I believe that what sets me apart from other translators is the fact that I am not only bilingual, but I have always bathed in two cultures. This understanding of culture is essential for an accurate translation, especially in the literary field. Indeed, I believe that language is much more than a simple tool for communicating. It is first and foremost an identity, a reflexion of the culture, history, and heritage of the people who speak it, and no one can claim to truly understand and speak a language unless he understands the people who speak it. Although to the untrained ear all English people may sound the same, George Bernard Shaw explained it best when he said that "It is impossible for an Englishman to open his mouth without making some other Englishman hate or despise him.". I believe I have sufficient knowledge of French, English, American, and Australian culture to accurately transmit the intention behind the words in French and English, in all kinds of register and levels of speech, from basilect, to mesolect, to acrolect.
